Why Is Juneteenth Food Red?
Juneteenth is traditionally celebrated because it was the day soldiers arrived at Galveston, Texas in 1865 to announce the end of the civil war and that slavery is abolished. Freedom was gained on June 19th from a long and hard fight. The Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1963 to outlaw slavery and Juneteenth are both important historical moments for African Americans.
The color red is symbolic of life, and the blood of enslaved people who suffered and died. However, red food has had a much longer history that started back in Africa. According to Atlas Obscura, it may started from slaves being lured using red flannel cloths and red handkerchiefs to the Asante and Yoruba’s special occasions of offering up the blood of animals to their ancestors and gods.
Today red food is a major way of commemorating the legacy of slavery. Red velvet cake, watermelon, strawberry soda, and red punch always made appearances at Juneteenth celebrations.
