16 Laundry Hacks That Will Change The Way You Wash Clothes

Sharing is caring!

This post is all about laundry hacks for busy moms.

With so many cleaning tasks to do at home, doing laundry can be the least fun. This was the case for me a few years back. There are four of us in my household so there are a lot of clothes, towels, and linens to sort through which can sometimes be overwhelming.

Laundry Hacks

This sounds too familiar, huh? Well luckily for you, I’ve learned a couple of laundry hacks over the years that have saved me tons of time and money. So check out these awesome tips to elevate your laundry routine and I hope you find them helpful!

1. DIY Dryer Sheets

Replace dryer sheets with a towel soaked in fabric softener. Allow it to completely dry for a 2-3 days before throwing in the dryer.

2. Make Your Own Laundry Detergent Pods

Save money by making your own laundry detergent pods. Learn how here!

3. Freeze Jeans in Ziploc Bag

Got smelly jeans? Put them in a Ziploc bag and place in the freezer to kill the germs and bacteria that cause the odor first before you load them in the washer.

4. Build a Laundry Basket Organizer

How cool is this laundry basket sorter? Check out how you can build one in your own laundry room by reading this tutorial!

5. Deodorize Clothes with Vinegar

One of my favorite laundry hacks! Get rid of smelly musty odor on your clothes caused by body sweat and dirt with vinegar. Grab an empty spray bottle and make a 1:1 solution of water and vinegar and mix. I like to mix 1 cup of water and 1 cup of white vinegar recipe. Spray on your clothes and hang outside to air dry or on a drying rack.

6. Wash Socks in Mesh Laundry Bag

Take your laundry organization to the next level by washing socks in a mesh laundry bag (like this set from Amazon). I actually have a few mesh bags for socks since they’re a lot easier to pair up when folding.

7. Want to dry clothes faster? Use the Towel Trick!

Tossing a dry towel in there for 15 to 20 minutes will help absorb moistures from other items. This will definitely cut down on drying time.

8. Remove Armpit Stains with Lemon and Baking Soda

No bleach needed here! Remove yellow and gray armpit stains out of your shirts by applying a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda to it. Then, let it sit for at least an hour before you toss it inside the washing machine. It truly is an amazing stain remover for sweat stains!

9. Put Baby Powder on An Oil Stain

Another one of my favorite laundry hacks. The powder will soak up all the oil and any grease stains when left overnight.

10. Use Ice Cubes to De-wrinkle Clothes

Here’s a neat trick I learned from my mom. Simply add a couple of ice cubes in the dryer with your wrinkled clothes for about 15 minutes. The dryer will melt the ice thus creating steam that will de-wrinkle your clothes.

11. Remove Ink Stains with Hairspray

The alcohol found in hairspray can act as a powerful solvent. So, after spraying it over the ink stain, allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes and then wash as usual.

12. Clean Suede using a Nail File

Don’t you hate it when dirt gets caught on your suede boots? You can get the dirt out by using a nail file.

13. Un-shrink clothes with Hair Conditioner

A tip I learned from Down by The Bay. Un-shrink your clothes by soaking it in lukewarm water and adding hair conditioner. It will stretch back out to its original form!

14. Brighten Dull White with Boiled Lemons

boil lemons to whiten clothes

Here’s another one of my favorite laundry hacks I learned from Martha Stewart a few months back. Throw a few sliced lemons in water and bring to a boil. Turn off heat and add dingy white clothes you want to revive. Let soak for an hour then wash as usual.

15. Add a Tennis Ball When Drying Pillows and Blankets

According to LifeHacker, you can keep your blankets, comforters and pillows nice and fluffy by throwing in two or three tennis balls with them in the dryer. It will also help it dry faster too!

16. Use a Detergent Drip Catcher

Such a genius device! I just hate it when dripping soap detergents make a mess all over my cabinets. With a few of these Tidy Cup Laundry Gadgets, you can save the mess and clean up.
