8 Ways To Create A Successful New Year Plan
As 2019 draws to an end, you should close your eyes to old ends and open your heart to new beginnings. Take a leap of faith and begin the new year by believing that it will be your best year ever.
What the New Year will bring to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year. RIGHT NOW is the right time to plan for a successful one.
1. Don’t Do New Year’s Resolutions
New Year resolutions are dumb. They don’t work. Instead of setting New Year resolutions, set new month resolutions.
Every month, you should have a new goal that you plan to achieve. In this way, you’re setting S.M.A.R.T. goals and you will be hitting them by the end of the month. SMART GOALS= Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based goals. Set one big overarching goal and then set small goals that support this big goal. You can learn more about setting S.M.A.R.T. goals here (see number 3).
2. Have the Right Mindset
Before you plan for a successful New Year, you should prepare your mind for it. Your mind is the main tool that will help you achieve your heart desires. Developing the right mindset is crucial to succeeding in anything.

Success is a mindset thing. Having a morning routine will help you start the day with the right mindset. It’s best to plan out your day the night before using a planner. This will lay the groundwork for your day, helping you stay organized, productive, and focused. Morning routines for success include waking up at the same time every day, drinking a glass of water after waking up, eating breakfast, exercising and/or meditating in the morning.
I meditate for 10 minutes every morning because it helps set the right tone for the day and keeps me calm. You can check out my full morning routine here.
3. Learn Life-Changing Habits
Your habits shape your life. In 2020, you should cultivate good habits. With time and effort, almost any bad habit can be reshaped. For example, procrastination is a bad habit that will make you not want to achieve your 2020 goals.
Break the habit of procrastination by breaking up your tasks and goals into manageable pieces. Starting your day with the hardest tasks can help to prevent procrastination. It is easier to focus in the earlier hours of the day.
Structuring your life will also help you conquer procrastination. Honestly, everyone needs structure and routines in their life. You will perform best when you operate on a regular schedule.
Developing healthy habits will also increase your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Start by having a healthy diet as this will make your brain to perform at its peak. Don’t forget to exercise regularly and build healthy sleeping habits to increase your productivity.
Here are more life changing habits that you can do in 30 minutes or less:
- Read. Read. Read.
- Go for walks
- Meditate
- Write down things you’re grateful for
- Unplug before you head to bed
4. Check what’s filling up Your Jar
Your day is like an empty jar. You should fill your jar with the right stuff. You might be filling your jar with sand by doing meaningless activities that contribute little towards your goals. You need to fill your jar with big rocks. The big rocks comprise major milestones in your life.
You need to have a scale of priorities. Remember, you only have 24 hours in a day. Out of these, you have less than 10 hours of productive time. Thus, you should manage your time effectively.
Effective time management will improve your productivity and efficiency. It will decrease stress and anxiety and help you to achieve a better balance between your career and life goals.
5. Write Things Down
In this digital age, it can be hard to remember the last time you wrote things down. If you want to plan for a successful New Year, you should write your goals on paper or using a planner. A planner is more preferable since it’s more organized.
At times, you need to physically see something written down on paper so that to remember to commit to it. Writing things down facilitates a higher level of thinking, and therefore, more focused action. Writing things down will also help your brain to prioritize the things that you should focus on at a particular time.

6. Pace Yourself
Life is not a sprint. It is a marathon. Therefore, you should pace yourself accordingly.
Consider life as a step-by-step journey. Step by step and mile by mile and you will be closer to your goals than when you first began. You will not accomplish all your goals in one month. You need to take one pace at a time.
Every day you should do something that contributes towards your success. If you are writing a novel, you can write 2 pages a day. By the end of the year, you would have written 700 pages.
7. Take Mental Breaks
Mental breaks increase productivity and creativity. A mental break will refresh your mind and replenish your mental resources. According to research, those who take mental breaks are likely to experience those “Aha moments.”
8. Step It Up and Be Extraordinary
You don’t have time to be average. Don’t settle for less. Go out there and grab it. Be extraordinary! Do something you have never done before. Start writing that book, grab your laptop and publish your blog, join the gym, and share your art with the world.
Live up to your full potential this New Year. Don’t limit yourself. Everything that you want in life is possible. You just need to go that extra mile because it is that extra mile that counts.
Once you have set it up, the next thing is to implement it extraordinarily.
