9 Multipurpose Items That’ll Help You Save Money & Space
With today’s economy and my commitment to simplifying certain areas in my life, buying multi-purpose products have saved me tons of money because I no longer need to buy tons of products that focuses on one issue. You’ll be surprised with the many products around your house that have more than one use. Below is a comprehensive list of multipurpose items that you can refer to the next time you go shopping for household products.
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has a wide range of health benefits as it can be used on hair as well as on your skin. Coconut oil is available in grocery stores, and their unique oil composition can be beneficial for different types of hair (See my DIY Coconut Oil Rose Conditioner Mask recipe). This oil is a natural moisturizer that makes your skin soft and smooth. The natural antioxidating properties of coconut oil can stop skin irritation and wrinkles.
It improves your digestion due to the antimicrobial properties it has. You can use coconut oil to cook so that you fight infections and irritation in the gut.
2. Olive Oil
If you are looking for multipurpose items to save money, consider purchasing olive oil. I use it with coconut oil and sometimes with shea butter to moisturize my dry skin especially during the winter months. This oil makes your skin smooth, and it glows. You can also use olive oil to remove eye make up before bedtime or when you want to take a shower.
Aside from skincare, you can use small amounts of olive oil on furniture to obtain gleaming results and can be used to remove grease, tar, paint, chewing gum, or stickers from surfaces or pieces of cloth.
3. Essential Oils
There are many essential oils, and each of them has more than one use around your house. Replace a cabin load of products by purchasing different essential oils. I mention two of my favorites below:
Eucalyptus
Use this essential oil to decongest your airways and to kill pathogens. Eucalyptus is a potent antimicrobial agent that protects you from airborne bacteria. You can also use this essential oil to relieve muscular aches and pain too.
Lemon
Lemon is a detoxifier and an antiseptic that finds purpose in your body as well as around the house. Taking in lemon boosts your alertness and mental clarity. Other benefits include minimizing irritations and curbing any allergic reactions. Lemon can be used as a home cleaning product. My go-to recipe is by mixing it with warm water and vinegar to make a surface spray.
4. Tea
We all know tea bags soaked in warm water activates the beneficial components of tea. Instead of throwing them away, you can place soaked tea bags on your skin to ease itching and soothe inflammation. The tannins found in tea constrict blood vessels to help stop bleeding or heal bruises. You can also place the bags on your eyes to reduce puffiness and dark circles.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar
One of my top multipurpose items to save money is apple cider vinegar. It is a natural health product with scientifically proven benefits. Among the reasons you should buy this item is because it helps with:
• Lowering blood sugar levels
• Weight loss
• Diabetes
• Reducing cholesterol
Apple cider vinegar is high in acetic acid, and it contains strands of proteins and enzymes. All these are beneficial to your health as you can use a diluted solution to clear acne from your face or use it as a food preservative.
I made a huge list of the variety of ways to use apple cider vinegar. Read it here!
6. Reuseable Candle Jars
If you need to organize your bathroom and don’t want to spend money on organizers, look to your old candle jars. Candle jars can be recycled and re-used as stylish storage in your bathroom or bedroom. Because the candles don’t leave a lot of wax behind, you can easily clean the jar with hot water and find perfect use for them. Some of the items I like to store in candle jars include:
• Pens, pencils, and paperclips
• Makeup brushes and other makeup items
• Cotton swabs and cotton pads
• Flowers
These jars make a perfect display for your favorite items. One of my favorite bloggers, Paula from Thirteen Thoughts, shares in more detail how to reuse candle jars and get them wax free.
7. Dryer Sheets
Fabric softeners have other purposes other than softening fabric after a wash. You can place them in between books on a shelf to keep mold and mildew away. To leave your clothes feeling fresh, tuck air fresheners in clothes you have in a drawer. They also make for excellent alternative wipes to clean soap scum from your tub and shower.
8. Pure Castile Soap
Pure castile soap is a valuable product to have at home as you can use it to make a nourishing body wash as well as an all-purpose cleaning spray. My go-to diy body wash recipe is by mixing pure castile soap with a little honey and other essential oils. It will make your skin feel fresh and smooth. An all-purpose cleaning spray can also be made with pure castile soap. Just mix the soap with warm water, a bit of baking soda and essential oils- preferably lemon and lavender. You can have the soapy solution in a spray bottle for easy cleaning.
9. Baking Soda
You can add baking soda to laundry to boost washing power as well as make it last longer. I use it to eliminate odor in my refrigerator. It can also be a remedy for sunburn, bee stings, stomach upset and be used as an underarm deodorant.
Purchasing multipurpose items will help you save money and create space in your home. When you’re working on a budget, consider looking over your everyday shopping list to see which items can be used for more than one use before you go to the grocery store.
