How I Take Care of My Hardwood Floors

I’ve been packing my luggage for the past few days to get ready for my upcoming London trip. Before I leave for any vacation, I like to leave my house clean and spotless and that’s including my hardwood floors. In the past, it has been a challenge for me to clean them. I’ve noticed that it didn’t have that same sparkle and shine as it did when I moved in. I didn’t have a lot of knowledge on hardwood floor care and the thought of cleaning my floors scared me because I was so worried I might damage the wood.
It’s more complicated to keep hardwood floors intact than you might have believed. However, I’ve learned ways to keep them beautiful. If you’ve struggled to take better care of your hardwood floors, then keep reading because my guide to hardwood floor care can help.
My Top 3 Hardwood Floor Care Tips
1. Vacuum or Sweep The Floors Daily
I vacuum almost every day to keep my hardwood floors clean. I also use a microfiber mop to spot clean an area like if someone accidentally spills a drink and leaves a sticky mess. Cleaning your floors with a microfiber cloth or mop is the best daily defense against surface damage.
2. Mop The Floors Weekly
Using a mop is an ideal way to remove dirt from corners and other trouble areas. I currently use Bona Microfiber Spray Mop with Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner and it truly gets the job done. I just love it and yes, it’s the one I recommend!
Bona Microfiber Spray Mop glides through my hardwood floors with ease to remove dust, dirt and grime. It dries fast and doesn’t leave any streaks or residue behind. It’s also safe to use around your family and in your home since it’s GREENGUARD GOLD certified!
Its microfiber cleaning pad just picks up everything with one go which just makes it even more amazing. I plan to use nothing but Bona products for my hardwood floors from now on!
3. Place an Area Rug on “High Traffic” Areas
Frequent walks across an area multiple times a day can ultimately wear down the finish of a hardwood floor. I certainly can’t have that especially after using Bona on them. So, a beautiful area rug is the easiest way of reducing the wear. Make sure not to choose a rug with rubber or vinyl backing. They can trap humidity and this could damage the wood or ruin the stain or finish.

4. Avoid Walking in Stilettos
Stilettos should be left at the door to avoid piercing of the wood. To keep things extra pristine, you should seriously consider having a ‘no-shoe policy’ in your home for all kinds of footwear.
5. Polish Your Floors Every Few Months
Polishing your floors every few months is a remarkable way of cleaning them. Polishing refreshes and renews the look of your hardwood floors. When floors with protective sealant are cleaned, the finish, and not the actual hardwood, gets the most attention. Polishing can be done with minimal effort.
6. Keep Out The Rain
During the raining seasons, water can not only ruin a hardwood floor finish, it can also deeply penetrate into the wood and cause stain. If you’re expecting rain, keep your windows closed. Place trays under your potted plants and immediately mop up any water that is on the floor.
7. Deep Clean Your Floors
Hardwood floors undergo a lot of abuse; therefore, you should consider giving your floors a deep clean. Every 3 to 5 years, you should consider sanding and refinishing. Sanding and refinishing totally removes and replaces the old protective finish. If gouges or deep scratches are on your floor, they can be remedied by sanding, leaving you with gorgeous and pristine hardwood flooring.
Until then, I’ll continue to keep my hardwood floors looking pristine with Bona Microfiber Spray Mop and Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner.
